We’ve all seen hard times, it’s very common in life. We’ve been sick, we’ve lost close ones, we may struggle with anxiety or addiction. We may have felt lost and without direction. Life is full of hard times, or are they challenges? Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference.

As a relatively new dad with a daughter who has been trying to walk since she was 8 months old, I often find myself saying

“It’s ok love. Why do we fall? So we may learn to pick ourselves back up.”

Although I am Superman, that one comes from Thomas Wayne, telling that to a young Bruce Wayne.

Is it true though, isn’t it? We fall, get turned down for a job we want, hit rock bottom, and land on hard times so we may learn how to be resilient. Not necessarily so we may learn to solider on but that we may learn to face those hard times, those challenges and grow from them. We pick ourselves back up and use what we learned to forge a new path, hit the challenge from a different angle. Heck, we may even ask for help (why do so many of us have a hard time asking for help?). We are always growing and always learning.

One of my favorite books which has also been turned into some of my favorite movies is “The Lord of the Rings.”

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Frodo was in hard times facing an unfathomable challenge with insurmountable odds that would most likely take the life of the young hobbit.

Look for those challenges in your life, face them. Learn and grow from those challenges, falls, and hard times. You are beautiful, great and you can do this.

You may be saying “But Kelvin, that’s just fiction!” We can learn from and be inspired by anything! We just need to be open to it.

Like Gandalf said, what are you going to do with the time that is given to you?

I’m sensing greatness!
