The pandemic hit in 2020 and impacted all of us in one way or another. The impact may have been a transition to remote work, being disconnected from others, new communication barriers, a pay cut, a career change, a loss of a job, or any plethora of things. Many of us were left lost and confused, not entirely sure of the path forward. While it has always been important to support one another, that importance has never felt more important than now.

Social media is a simple and time-effective way to help support and promote your family, friends, and network connections. Our network is filled with individuals that own a business or are a professional that markets on social media. It takes relatively no time at all to follow their page and engage with their posts.

What it means when you follow their business page

There’s a lot that goes on the algorithm that Facebook uses to decide who to show a page’s content to, when to show it, and where to show it in their feed. When you follow someone’s business page, you increase the number of followers their business page has. The more followers a business page has, the more credible it is with Facebook, and the more people Facebook will show it to.

In addition to Facebook, the more followers a business page has, the more credibility it has with other individuals as well. Following a business page is essentially a vote of confidence in that organization. Followers are also more likely to see the business posts in their feed, providing more opportunities to engage with their content.

What it means when you engage with their content

Let’s start with engagement and what it is. In regards to social media and Facebook specifically in this article, engagement is when you like, comment, and/or share a business post. Engagement tends to happen when the content catches the attention of the audience, and they feel compelled to engage with the content. Think about it, when you see a post from them, how long does it truly take to click the “like” button? If the content clicks with you, comment on it, or even better, share it too.

Central to the content marketing strategy, businesses are looking to attract engagement. We mentioned that pesky little Facebook algorithm above. While no one knows the details of the algorithm, it is clear that the algorithm ranks posts with more engagement higher, getting them in front of more eyes. In particular, engagement that attracts longer comments (e one-word comments do not cut it here), generates discussions and is shared (the more, the better).

Talk about their business with your friends, family, and network

While this may certainly be done on social media, this can also be done in person or across several mediums. How often have you gone somewhere, bought something, checked something out just because someone you knew and trusted mentioned it? We all have, no shame here! Tell your family, friends, and network about their business; word of mouth still carries the most weight in this realm.

Facebook gives your a platform to tell your network about a business, share a product, refer a business (vice versa, when you are in need of something particular, you can ask your network for recommendations). Are you visiting your friend’s business? Facebook makes it easy to share with the “check-in” feature. Simply open your status update, click the map marker to check-in, select their business, create some content about the business (what you’re doing there, what you’re getting, etc.), and hit post. It’s that simple, and you have just helped your family member, friend, or network connection grow and succeed in their business.

We all want to help those we know, and even those we don’t know. Using social media to help others increase their reach and grow their business is both easy and takes little time. When you are working on your own business, remember that what goes around, comes around.

Until next time, keep smiling.
